Glest 3.0.0 is released ( !!release 3.1 is out!!)

Hi,
after a lot of changes Glest 3.0.0 is finally released now!
I hope you will make an installer for Linux! (I really like them!!)

This is what the developer send to me:
After a long beta process we finally released Glest 3.0.0 final.

This is a huge step in Glest development, since this version is the first one integrating LAN/Internet multiplayer.

New features.

- Network play over LAN/Internet
- New key shortcuts for giving orders and selecting special units
- Renamed some units
- Reworked tech faction upgrades
- Balance changes

Important info which should be distributed with the installer:
There is no masterserver yet! If you want to find someone to play multiplayer come to: irc://irc.freenode.net/glest

Important changes/hints for linux:
- you can toggle fullscreen/window mode with alt+return ( linux only, good for irc! )
- grouping of units with ctrl + 1,2,3,.... works now
- g3dviewer and the glest editor works/compiles now ( please include it if possible )
- The font used in the glest.ini file ( you find it in the svn under mk/linux ) is probably not installed on every system. Please use a bit more common one for the loki version.
- please take care that you use the correct data files. Glest calculates/compares checksums of the used data directorys techs/tileset/map in multiplayer mode

Hi titi, thanks for all those information.
Now we have to wait for Gladiac to build the binaries.

Join #liflg on Freenode and get on his nerves :)

One question, is it possible to play with/against Windows or Mac users?

playing against win/mac is not really possible yet. You can try it by switching off networkconsistency in the glest.ini, but it usually crashes after a while, because the things get out of sync and there exists units in one OS that don't exists in another ( anymore).

I hope the things run well even with linux only now! Thats why we need the installer! By this it is shure that we all run the same binary!

Are they working to fix this? I would like to play with/against Mac and Windows people.

Now I'm suprised different units for different operating systems, I thought it's the same game?!

Yes, they(martinho) are working on this, but it's not really easy. Currently only commands are send to the server who provides them to the clients with a frame number when to execute the command. The execution of the commands is the job of every single client, but they are sometimes executed a bit different in the OSses. This problem is mainly caused by the fact that the linux version uses SDL and things like this and the windows version uses other libs which works slightly different in some cases ( probably timers or whatever, it's currently not clear). There are plans to use SDL for windows too, probably this will fix it.

All this currently gets the different OS clients out of sync after a while.

Hi, I never met Gladiac in the irc.
Can you motivate him a bit for me? :twisted:
There are so many (especially young) linux friends who cannot get it to work yet :(


I modified my first post where I suggested to add (my) mod from www.titusgames.de. I think it's really fun to play and really a good extra for glest. What did you think about including it in your installer?

glest 3.1 is near....
SO if you haven't started yet building a binary, wait for 3.1.

This one will come with its own precompiled binary !!!
I will tell you the details when its out!

As far as I know Gladiac didn't do anything till now :(

Who is going to build this binary, can you tell more about the changes in 3.1?

3.01 is out,
I build a binary which is currently the linux standard ( when in multiplayermode ). There is a big problem with different binaries at the moment. If they are only slightly different, the multiplayer games get out of sync and crashes. So please use this binary this time:

I hope the binary is very similar to yours ( but it contains debug )
It's compiled with ubuntu 6.06 glibc 2.36.
In the packages lib dir are the used libs ( like in liflg.orgs 2.1 release )
You should use this binary this time.( the glest binary, the editor binary can be individual )

changes in 3.1:
New features.

- In-game chat
- Main menu background model changed
- Server IPs are now stored in a file, and can be used later
- Network status key
- Map changes: Added 'Swamp of Sorrow' and 'Valley of Death', removed 'One on One' and 'The Ruins'
- Balance changes

Again thanks for your input and maybe we will see a installer for Glest 3.1.0 tomorrow (with it's own binary from our buildhost) :)
