Medal of Honour Allied Assault now broken in Xubuntu Karmic

Postby itoffshore » Wed Dec 16, 2009 8:39

Medal of Honour Allied Assault seems to be broken in Ubuntu Karmic (it worked fine in Hardy / Hardy with a Jaunty kernel)

I tried installing the game again (this requires libgtk-1.2 packages from Jaunty to be installed which are deprecated in Karmic as it uses libgtk-2.0) - the game menu loads ok & has sound but as soon as you load a level the loading progress bar doesn't move & the game crashes without any meaningful error messages. This seems to be a duplicate of this old bug https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1305

The cause of the problem doesn't seem to be related to the openal messages shown below as if I create a symlink in the game directory to /usr/lib/libopenal.so.0 (or .1) I get errors about missing Loki extenstions when the sound library is loaded.

libGL seems to be loading properly - when I ran Hardy with a Jaunty kernel the game was completable on single player so it can't be the new Xorg-Intel drivers which use EXA instead of UXA (or maybe it is a driver problem). Are there any other libraries called by fgame.so which are now no longer on my Karmic system which could be fixed with some symlinks ? (doing this fixed some other games after the move to Karmic) - as when fgame.so is loaded is when the game crashes.

My video card is an Intel G965M & I'm running the 2.6.31-16 kernal on Xubuntu Karmic

Hi itoffshore,

we can't help you with the Mohaa Beta Linux client, we only did the installer but the problem is not the installer it's the Linux client of the game.
This is client is beta software for quite a long time now, do not expect a update.

If you find a way running the game please let us know, thanks.

Gone back to Linux Mint 6 (intrepid 8.10)

Hi Kratz,

I've regressed back to Linux Mint 6 (based in ubuntu 8.10) & it's started working again. I just had to add a symlink for libGL:

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so

I also found Karmic 9.10 broke Sauerbraten & Blood Frontier - see:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/bloodfrontier/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=76

So there is a bug in the new xorg-intel drivers which have GEM support in the kernel. Moving back to 8.10 will also fix these problems - hopefully these problems will be fixed in 10.04. From a gaming point of view there is currently no benefit to running Karmic. As a benchmark I still get around 60 FPS in Urban Terror in 8.10 & 9.10

As it seems to be a distro bug, i'm going to close this.

Thanks itoffshore for your input.
