Aliens vs Predator - SDL Init failed: No available video dev

Postby Jusko » Sat Feb 20, 2010 3:21

Hi.

Just installed AVP on my Fedora 12. When I try to run game, I have:

$ ./avp
SDL Init failed: No available video device

Today AVP was tested on Ubuntu 8.04 (on my machine to check that this problem is on other distro too). On 8.04 AVG was run like a charm. But i installed ATi proprietary driver on Hardy Heron. On Fedora i must use open ATi/Radeon driver.

Hi Jusko,

and how is this our problem?
You figured the problem out by yourself.
We can't change anything about it, that Fedora is installing "other" drivers.

That's why i asked.

Problem is solved. Im using x86_64 system, and AVP is pure 32bit game, so i had missing 32bit library. I have missed libGL.so.1 and rest of his 32bit depends. Game run now, but i don't have sound, but there is topic about it, so i must read it.

I have one question. Under Windows there are FMV movies (in-game and intro-outro). Why there are cut in Linux version? There was impossible to port? And i have normal version. On Linux there is really Gold version, or it's just a name for better look?

Our support covers only installer related topics :)

I have no idea about the movies, you could ask the one who is responsible for the Linux port: http://icculus.org/avp/

Our installer is only for 'normal' version.

I think it's because the videos require binkw32.dll which is probably patent-encumbered and can't be run natively in Linux. If you really want/need videos, running AvP through Wine would be your best bet, though I remember having problems with it (I use fglrx which runs at 24 bits depth, and the game couldn't find any suitable video mode).
