I just installed crunchbang and the installer works without error (had to install libc6-i386 of course). I guess you have some non-default setup.

Maybe the relevant part of your /var/log/messages will help us (mojosetup writes to it).

1) Same here. Loading snd_pcm_oss helps.
2) Make sure that you are using the *.sh files. If it still does not work, please show us the errors which get printed on the terminal.

1) There is not need for this. 6.0b is just an updated installer.
2) I will update it ASAP. And I'll add support for padsp (EDIT: padsp does not work with loki_compat, so this is postponed).

Thank you for your help, I got it working very easily by running the .sh instead if the "executables" as I had been before. As I said, noobish over here.

I have managed to play until 4:30 in the morning without running into any problems, so that's good. I haven't got the sound working but I can see how it would be done.

The only problem that remains is that I had to "abort" installation at 99%, perhaps because Openbox does not support desktop items? This is a quick and easy workaround however, other than that the installer did its job!

Please try the installer once again and give us the output of the relevant logs (mojosetup does some relatively verbose logging). It should be stored somewhere under /var/log/, probably /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages and looks like this:

Too bad it does not tell us more. Guess we can not do a lot more at this stage.

Well, if you are not concerned about installing our installer as root we could take permission issues out of question. What do you think?

Installing as root it is the same story, some problem as before, but remember I am not so experienced with Linux, so before we close the case could you be very explicit about what you mean by running the installer as root?

OK, it still fails, even when running as root. This means that this is not a permission issue. But it also means that we won't be able to fix this bug. Sorry.

This means running the installer as root user :D

There are several ways this can be achieved, for example using "sudo" or "su".

By the way, I had a look at the source code, make sure xdg-utils are installed and xdg-desktop-menu is in the user's $PATH.

Hello all (first post)!

I'm having trouble running Heavy Gear 2, even using the beta installer.

Specs:
  • VMWare Player 14 VM
  • Linux Mint 18.3 32-bit
  • Heavy Gear 2 Demo ISO
I've had to do some extra things to get past the dependency hell:
  • Add the game folder to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
  • Build glib-1.2, which isn't straightforward and it's not available in modern distros
  • Install libesd0
  • Add a symlink for libaudiofile in the game folder (ln -sf /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libaudiofile.so.1 libaudiofile.so.0)
The problem I get is that the WM freezes when I launch the game. I have to switch to a TTY and kill the game process, then I see this error message:

Code: Select all

Error code XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode
Which, as far as I see, means that the game is using an X extension that might not be supported by my system. Is that the case? Can I get around that?

Does 3d acceleration work in the VM? Can you start other OpenGL applications/games successfully?

It works: glxinfo returns something useful and glxgears runs at about 900fps.

I moved the same VM to VirtualBox. Glxgears runs at about 1100 and the game does run, without sound and the mouse doesn't work, it only moves to the corners (4).

I also installed Ubuntu 6.06.3 (32 bits) in VirtualBox and there I had more luck: sound and mouse are working, although the game is too slow to be played (it's running at about 10fps). I guess I can blame the virtualised environment for that...

As far as I know, the problem with VMWare driver will probably happen with a real driver, as it depends on implementing DGA. I'll try in a week or so with a non-vm environment.

Do you know if this game has been run in a more recent (>2010) real environment? I even have a Voodoo 5 XP machine and the Windows version won't even run!

I do not, sorry.
http://www.improbability.net/loki/ might have some good pointers to get it running on a recent Linux distribution.
Good luck with your research!
It is definitely an interesting topic, please keep us in the loop about your progress.
